There’s no doubt that the media widely influences the opinion of the public on a large scale. I mean, you’re reading this right now and by the time you finish, you’ll have come up with your own opinion about this topic.

This article highlights the media’s influence on HIV/AIDS among the GBMSM (gay, bi, and men who have sex with men) community. The media is referred as a stakeholder, which is an any individual or group that has an influence on any business, social or political matter.

This stakeholder is likely to support all proposed policies that were discussed earlier in the potential policy section of this report. However, the power that this stakeholder has on the issue of new HIV infections among MSM and gay men depends on how other stakeholders will use the media itself as a resource in order to tackle this issue of elevated new HIV infections. The media has the most power in portraying the MSM and gay men community in a positive or negative light to the mass public.

Here’s some examples of types of media that can influence the rates of HIV/AIDS among gay men (BMC, 2014)

  • television
  • radio
  • film
  • print media (e.g., billboards)
  • digital media (e.g., social media)
